Monthly volume, stackedNational pharmacy footprint
10,474 pharmacies · hex-binned densityEvery NHS community pharmacy with a resolvable postcode (99.6% of the network), aggregated into hex bins. Darker hexes carry more pharmacies — high-density clusters trace the urban spine from London through Birmingham and up to Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle.
Branches by NHS region
7 regionsDeprivation concentration
9,812 pharmacies mapped to MHCLG IMD 2019The ten IMD deciles each contain exactly 10% of English LSOAs by design, so a uniform distribution would place 10% of pharmacies in each segment. Community pharmacy is visibly skewed toward the most-deprived end — a legacy of contract allocation that deliberately over-supplied low-income areas. This gives the sector a social-infrastructure role beyond pure retail.
National aggregates computed live from NHSBSA open data — the sum of every community, distance-selling, and LPS contract in England. Pharmacy First is omitted from the advanced-service stack above; volume is an order of magnitude higher than the others and would dominate the axis. Top-20 / top-5 concentration is by branch count across all 10,358 NHS pharmacies.
